"Never shall I forget the nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all eternity, of the desire to live. Never shall I forget these moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God himself. Never"
This seems to be a good representation of the book in its entirety. Just that one little paragraph describes the book better than any other plot summary or overview ever could. And probably, the author's reason of calling it Night. It's really depressing to know that someone can not only have written these words but have lived them.
