"Several days passed. Several weeks. Several months. A wind of calmness and reassurance blew through our houses."
It seems as if that was how Hitler was able to get so close to taking over so easily. People who are about to be sent to anywhere from months to years of suffering should not cause people to feel serenity. Just because someone was sent in their stead in the beginning doesn't mean that they should feel at least a shred of fear.
