"There were a few sturdy young fellows among us. They had knives on them, and they tried to incite the others to throw themselves on the armed guards."
It's sad that they didn't know what was coming. If they did then they may have fought back or at least have done something to make a difference in their future, however small it might have been. I understand that everyone was scared and confused, but all they did was follow along like little sheep, despite the fact that they had seen what happened to their friends/neighbors in the beginning. And that was just the beginning.
